Breastpump Troubleshooting |
| |
The pump won't start. |
Check if the breast pump is plugged into the power outlet correctly.
Ameda - check if the batteries are not yet drained. You should get 100 mins of pumping time for each new set of batteries. Rechargeable batteries should be 1.5v each (not 1.2v each). |
| |
The pump has weak suction |
Unimom/Spectra - check if the membranes are in place and all the parts are tightly attached to each other. Check if the tubings/breastflanges do not have cracks.
Ameda - check if the valves and diaphragms have no holes or tears. Check if the tubings/breastkits do not have cracks. If you're using only a single breastkit, ensure that the other suction hole is covered.
If milk has entered the breast pump or the breast pump was accidentally dropped, this could be the cause of weak suction. The breast pump should be sent to the Babymama repair center for evaluation.

Milk has entered the tube |
| Disconnect the tubes from the breast pump immediately and shoot either sterile water and/or alcohol through the tubes. Hang the tubes in an open-air area to dry. Wait for the alcohol to dry up before using again. ITo prevent milk from entering the tubes, keep the bottles in an upright position at all times and do not let milk reach the top of the bottle. |

To prevent milk from entering the tubes and the pump, do not overfill the bottles and keep them in an upright position. |

| My breasts still feel full after pumping. |
For the most effective setting, increase the suction strength until you feel pain and then decrease from there until it's comfortable.
Ameda - take advantage of the speed setting to encourage multiple letdowns.
If your breasts still feel full, check if the suction strength still feels the same as the initial strength. Milk could have entered the breast pump or the pump could have been dropped without you knowing it, leading to decreased suction.
You can also try the optional silicone massagers to get more milk during pumping.
It is important that your breasts feel fully drained after 20-25 minutes of pumping so that your milk supply will not decrease. In case you do not feel drained, make sure you hand express using Marmet Technique at the end of the session for a further 5-10 mins. |
