How Can Dads Help In Breastfeeding

Often referred to as the “significant other”, the husband certainly plays a vital role in ensuring a successful breastfeeding journey for his wife. As they both agree to breastfeed their newborn, both of them must team up together throughout the difficulties and joys of breastfeeding. Here are valuable ways the man can provide the strong support his wife needs as she breastfeeds their baby: [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=”row”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”justified” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid” text_font_size=”16″]

1. Attend breastfeeding information trainings.

Be on the same page with your wife by learning as much practical wisdom about breastfeeding as you can. Though having a professional lactation consultant around is ideal, your presence as a dependable partner who can provide her answers to bits of challenges she experiences is priceless. After all, somebody apart from her has to remember the instructions and reminders of your lactation consultant.

2. Join support groups.

It is important to belong to a group of individuals who share the same experiences and challenges as you do. They will be able to counsel, encourage and support you. There are non-governmental organizations that exist to aid the fathers who play a critical role in family life specifically on maternal and child health. One such organization is ERPAT or Empowerment Reaffirmation of Paternal Abilities and Trainings, which was created by the Mandaluyong City Social Welfare Development Office. It gives trainings on various breastfeeding-related topics such as “How to be a supportive partner and father”, “The importance of breastfeeding”, “How to approach breast conditions” and many more.

3. Provide strong emotional support.

Be sensitive to her needs and feelings. Always put yourself in her shoes. Your encouraging and reassuring words that come at the perfect time she needs to hear them most enable her to keep going in her breastfeeding journey.

4. Nurture her physical needs.

Being tied up on feeding your baby, aim to be an extension of her body and reach out for the things she requires help on. Lend her a pillow to rest her arms on, give her a soothing massage on her tired neck and shoulders while having a rest from feeding, help her organize her things or concoct some fresh fruit juice to quench her thirst every now and then.

5. Guard her privacy.

Breastfeeding a baby is a very private matter and exposing one’s breasts come with a purpose and not for everyone to see. Who would want visitors to interrupt one’s feeding time? The role of the father as a responsible gatekeeper to guard her privacy and manage the flow of visitors is very vital indeed.

6. Develop your bonding time with your baby.

Breastfeeding doesn’t have to leave you out in the cold. This only happens when you don’t take an active part in the breastfeeding process. You equally have a share of your baby’s attention and bonding time. Take turns in caring for that little one. Put the baby to sleep, rest him on your chest or shoulders and burp him after every feeding. Use of breast pump in the Philippines is one valuable tool to develop your bonding time with baby. When you have enough milk collected from your wife, you can continue to feed your baby while she is resting or asleep. There are so many ways to bond. Remember, your wife is not on this alone. As parents, you both have a share in making your baby feel loved and cared for.

7. Help out in household chores.

Not all married couples are blessed with a household help. With the humongous tasks piled up, spare some time from your work schedule to do some household chores. Clear the trash bin, put some dirty clothes into the washing machine and order or cook some hot meals for you and your spouse. I leave it up to you to think of practical ways to lighten up your wife’s already huge task of breastfeeding. [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]
