Nipples get affected differently when we feed directly at breast and hand expression than with using a pump. Pumping makes our nipples swell more and become larger in diameter.
Your nipple measurement may also change several months into using your breast pump and feeding your baby. It may be necessary to measure each of your nipples again. Using a correct fitting flange allows for a more comfortable pumping session. It allows your nipple to move freely in the tunnel of the flange pulling only a little of the areola.
Pumping is not a one size fits all activity since breasts and nipples are of many different shapes and sizes. Finding the right fit for you may mean you will need to order flanges that were not included with your pump.
How to Measure your Nipple using the Ruler:
- Hold the ruler beside your nipple with 0 lined up on the edge of one side.
- The edge on the opposite side of your nipple is the number in millimeters of your nipple diameter.
- Measure each nipple individually since nipples are not always the same size.
How to Measure your Nipple using the circles on your Silicone Measuring Tool:
- Place the nipple through the smallest hole you can comfortably fit it into without force.
- Your nipple should fit completely inside the hole. Make sure entire nipple is visible inside the hole right where it meets the areola tissue.
- The number in millimeters indicates your nipple diameter.
- Measure each nipple individually since nipples are not always the same size.
